Metallizing
When the construction is completely blasted, the metallizing can begin. Metallizing is also called "schooperen".

By metallizing your construction, you protect steel against corrosion for a period of more than 50 years. Unlike paint, where the life expectancy is only 20 years.

Metallizing is thus applied to make constructions more corrosion-resistant, but it is also applied to give the surface, and with this the visual exterior, a unique sheen or to make it scratch-resistant. So metallising has three advantages!

  • The construction remains rust and corrosion free for a very long time
  • The construction gets a unique sheen
  • The structure becomes more scratch-resistant

Metallization techniques
Metallizing can be done through different techniques, namely through hot dip galvanizing, electroplating, an electric arc and an autogenous flame.

When hot-dip galvanising, the construction is immersed in a tub filled with liquid zinc. This is then cooled, after which a perfect layer of zinc has attached itself to the steel construction. Zinc is often used as protection on structures that face a temperate climate.

When galvanising, the aluminium is not heated, but uses an electric current. This ensures that the aluminium attaches itself to the structure. Aluminium is used in constructions that have to deal with a maritime climate or are submersed.

Metallising can be done with aluminium, magnesium, bronze or brass. Brass is a combination of copper and aluminium.
